C. 1840 portrait of Captain Freeman H. Bangs. Born in Brewster, November 1, 1809, Bangs commenced going to sea as a boy. In 1836, he had command of the brig Roxanna in the Mediterranean trade. He was commander of several different ships, among them being the Joseph Holmes, Faneuil Hall and the Celeste Clark. While he had the Faneuil Hall, she was lost off the coast of Brazil while bound for Calcutta. He retired from the sea in 1865 and died in January 1866 in Brewster where he had always made his home.
This handsome portrait hangs in the Cobb House Museum stairwell gallery alongside his wife, Susan Griffith Bangs’ portrait. They resided at 1580 Main Street in Brewster.
Donated by Henry and Suzanne Foster in 2005. It was in very poor condition until it was restored in 2007 with funding from the Mary-Louise Eddy and Ruth N Eddy Foundation.
