Annual Meeting of Brewster Historical Society – Guest Speaker: Beth Stein
Howard Gibbs and Eugene Fitsch: Together Again
Saturday September 27, 2024 – 4 PM at Brewster Ladies Library, 1822 Main Street.
Howard Gibbs was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1904; Eugene Fitsch was a painter, printmaker, and stage designer, born in Alsace-Lorraine, France in 1892.
Their respective career paths brought them both to Brewster, where Gibbs lived in the Cobb House, Fitsch in a house that he built on Setucket Road.
While living in Brewster, Gibbs’s painting style transitioned to the emotional and spontaneous; he painted to please himself, applying thick paint in bright, splattered colors.
Fitsch worked at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis; he also exhibited at the Scargo Gallery. Fitsch particularly used local subject matter in his work, such as the Brewster weirs and local beaches and coves.
They both were a part of a group of artists and writers who lived, worked and socialized in Brewster. This consortium of artists rivaled the artist colony that had developed in Provincetown.
Join Beth Stein as she discusses the individual lives, works and friendship of these two accomplished Brewster artists.
Beth Stein has been educating adult audiences on the lives and works of famous artists for the past fifteen years, on Cape Cod and in New Jersey. She received her BS in education from Indiana University, MA in history from Seton Hall University and MA in administration/supervision from Montclair State University.
In her retirement, Beth presented illustrated talks on a variety of art history topics at adult schools, libraries, museums, and community centers in New Jersey, and since 2015, continues to do so at various venues on Cape Cod. In addition, she is the current Chair of the Programs and Advancement Committee for the Brewster Historical Society, Brewster, Massachusetts.
